CTIA's TZM Alloy in Extrusion Dies

TZM alloy (Titanium Zirconium Molybdenum) is a molybdenum-based alloy widely used in extrusion dies for high-temperature continuous extrusion processes. It is mainly applied to extrusion die cores, die sleeves, die inserts, guide components, and other heat-resistant die parts. During metal extrusion, extrusion dies are exposed to prolonged high temperatures, high pressures, and friction caused by high-speed metal flow, which can result in wear, creep deformation, and dimensional changes. Therefore, die materials require excellent high-temperature strength, creep resistance, wear resistance, and dimensional stability. CTIA’s TZM alloy is manufactured through powder metallurgy, with titanium (Ti: 0.40%–0.55%), zirconium (Zr: 0.06%–0.12%), and carbon (C: 0.01%–0.04%) additions forming TiC and ZrC dispersion-strengthened phases in the molybdenum matrix. This microstructure provides excellent high-temperature strength, creep resistance, and dimensional stability, allowing TZM alloy to maintain die cavity accuracy and structural stability during long-term high-temperature extrusion operations.
Why Is CTIA’s TZM Alloy Suitable for Extrusion Dies?
CTIA’s TZM alloy provides reliable performance in high-temperature extrusion applications through:
(1) Excellent high-temperature strength and extrusion deformation resistance: With a room-temperature tensile strength of 600–900MPa, it maintains strong load-bearing capability during continuous high-temperature extrusion, reducing deformation and failure risks caused by extrusion pressure.
(2) Excellent creep resistance and dimensional stability: TiC and ZrC dispersion-strengthened phases improve high-temperature deformation resistance, with a tensile strength of approximately 500MPa at 1000°C. This helps reduce die hole enlargement and dimensional drift under long-term extrusion loads, improving extrusion product consistency.
(3) Good wear resistance for high-speed friction conditions: With stable microstructure and excellent high-temperature hardness, it reduces wear on die working surfaces caused by high-speed metal flow, extending die service life.
(4) Excellent thermal cycling stability for continuous production: With a high recrystallization temperature of approximately 1350–1450°C and a low coefficient of thermal expansion of approximately 5.5–5.9×10⁻⁶/K, it withstands repeated heating and cooling cycles while reducing thermal fatigue-related dimensional changes.
(5) Excellent precision machining capability for complex die structures: Can be machined into die holes, cavities, flow channels, and complex structures to meet different extrusion processes’ requirements for die accuracy and structural design.
Applications of CTIA’s TZM Alloy in Extrusion Dies
CTIA’s TZM alloy is mainly used in:
(1) Mandrels, die sleeves, and die inserts in extrusion dies for producing metal tubes, rods, and profiles, designed to withstand high-temperature, high-pressure, and friction conditions in aerospace, automotive, and advanced equipment manufacturing applications;
(2) Heat-resistant die components for hot extrusion of aluminum alloys, copper alloys, stainless steels, titanium alloys, and other metals, maintaining extrusion channel stability and product forming accuracy;
(3) Support rings, pressure heads, and other high-temperature load-bearing components in non-ferrous metal processing, precision manufacturing, and special alloy extrusion equipment, improving long-term structural reliability;
(4) Key extrusion die components for aerospace structures, lightweight automotive profiles, and high-performance alloy processing, reducing risks of high-temperature deformation, wear, and failure.
