1. What's TZM Alloy Mandrel?
TZM Alloy Mandrel (Titanium Zirconium Molybdenum Alloy Mandrel) is high-temperature tooling mainly used for internal support and piercing forming of hot tube billets during seamless steel tube hot piercing processes, including stainless steel tubes, high-temperature alloy steel tubes, and drill pipe tubes. CTIA’s TZM alloy mandrel is manufactured using high-purity molybdenum powder as the matrix, with titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), and carbon (C) additions through powder metallurgy process to form TiC and ZrC dispersion-strengthened phases. As the mandrel operates under long-term high-temperature, high-pressure, and high-speed friction conditions, the material provides excellent high-temperature strength, deformation resistance, wear resistance, and dimensional stability. CTIA’s TZM mandrel maintains structural integrity and service life under demanding conditions, meeting continuous hot piercing requirements.
2. Advantages of CTIA’s TZM Alloy Mandrel
(1) Strong High-Temperature Load Capacity
With a melting point of approximately 2620°C, the material maintains excellent strength and rigidity under high-temperature and high-pressure piercing conditions, meeting continuous hot processing requirements.
(2) Excellent Deformation Resistance
TiC and ZrC strengthening phases improve high-temperature structural stability, suppress grain growth and creep deformation, and maintain dimensional stability during long-term exposure to heat and pressure.
(3) Good Wear Resistance
With a density of ≥9.2g/cm³ and Vickers hardness exceeding 350kg/mm², the material provides approximately 2%–6% higher density and 60%–80% improved wear resistance compared with conventional molybdenum mandrels, making it suitable for long-term high-speed friction environments.
(4) Reliable Thermal Fatigue Resistance
With a coefficient of thermal expansion of approximately 5.5–5.9×10⁻⁶/K, the material reduces thermal stress during repeated heating and cooling cycles, minimizing surface cracking and failure risks.
(5) Extended Service Life
Higher hardness, high-temperature strength, and wear resistance compared with conventional molybdenum mandrels reduce replacement frequency and improve the stability of seamless steel tube hot piercing production.
3. Applications of CTIA’s TZM Alloy Mandrel
CTIA’s TZM alloy mandrel is used in:
(1) Hot piercing of stainless steel seamless tubes for continuous processing under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions;
(2) Piercing of alloy steel tubes and high-temperature alloy steel tubes to improve piercing stability and mandrel service life;
(3) Production of special steel tubes such as drill pipe tubes under high-load and high-friction conditions;
(4) Hot forming of difficult-to-machine metal tubes requiring dimensional stability at elevated temperatures.
